Course Description

This course provides an in-depth exploration of digital imaging technologies and informatics systems used in modern radiographic practice. Students will compare and contrast the latent image formation processes across various digital systems. The course also introduces the fundamentals of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), emphasizing their role in image storage, retrieval, and workflow efficiency.

Learners will examine key digital imaging characteristics, image processing techniques, and manipulation tools that enhance diagnostic quality. Additional topics include networking and communication basics, medical image storage and communication devices, and the fundamentals of Medical Imaging and Management Processing Systems (MIMPS). The course concludes with an overview of downtime procedures to ensure continuity of care during system outages.

Course Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the latent image formation process for storage phosphor, flat panel with thin-film transistor (TFT), and charge-coupled device (CCD) digital imaging systems.
  2. Summarize digital imaging characteristics.
  3. Summarize digital image processing and manipulation.
  4. Summarize networking and communication basics.
  5. Summarize the fundamentals of MIMPS, medical image storage devices, and medical image communication devices.
  6. Summarize downtime procedures.

Instructional Methods

This online learning course is delivered through a combination of asynchronous interactions. Students will learn through lectures, case studies, relevant class discussions, simulation, collaborative learning groups, inquiry, group chats with their peers and instructor, and assignments.

Definition of Credit Hour

Semester Credit Hour: Academic credit is calculated on a semester credit hour basis. A semester credit is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than (1) one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours out-of-class student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit, or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time; or (2) at least an equivalent amount of work as required outlined in item 1 above for other academic activities as established by the institution including laboratory work, externships, practicum, and other academic work leading to the award of credit hours.

Credit Hour Conversion: Minimum in-class equivalent work is calculated under the following formula for each semester credit:

Lecture

15 classroom lecture hours = 1 semester credit hour

Laboratory

30 laboratory hours = 1 semester credit hour

Externship / Clinical / Practicum

45 externship/clinical/practicum hours = 1 semester credit hour

Fractions of credits (other than one-half) are rounded down to the next lowest half- or whole number.

UMA also expects each student to do outside work each week to support his/her classroom time. This work includes but is not limited to assigned reading, research, homework, test preparation, projects, group assignments, practicing learned skills, writing papers, and other activities as assigned and documented on the course syllabus. The combination of in-class and out-of-class work for each UMA semester credit represents a minimum of 45 total hours or its recognized equivalent.
